Darlingtonia

Materials: Commercial cottons, artist dyed cottons, thread, batting, and Tsukineko Inks.

Artist Statement:
Hidden just off Hwy 101 near Florence, Oregon, my husband and I discovered an amazing 18 - acre botanical preserve that blew us away.
This coastal bog displayed unique and endangered carnivorous species called Darlingtonia californica, perhaps better known as Cobra Lilies or Pitcher Plants. Every 10 – 36” stalk had a unique trait that highlighted their colorful personality – a cocked hood, scaley skin, or an overarching spotted head decorated with a mustache shaped appendage to attract insects. These interesting plants were a perfect inspiration for creating Biophilia in fiber.
